The Howard Payne University Pre-College Music Department will begin Kindermusik classes this year on September 1. Registration deadline for these classes is August 20.
“If you watch a licensed Kindermusik teacher you will see a gentle guide and coach, never a drill sergeant or choreographer,” said Diane Owens, associate professor of music and director of the Pre-College music program at HPU. “Skilled and well-trained, the Kindermusik teacher respects your child’s strong need for independence by showing him/her how to do something, then allowing the child to try. This allows the child to develop competence, self-confidence, and self-worth.”
“Parents are also an important witness and guide to a child’s self-exploration,” she said. “No prior musical training is required to nurture the child’s joyful musical disposition. It is just waiting to blossom.”
During each semester, children receive home materials that allow the child and parent to continue the learning experience during the week so that music becomes a natural and important part of the family life.
“As they watch their children grow and learn at home and in class, Kindermusik parents feel a special joy that comes with knowing they are giving their child a loving, positive experience at precisely the age and in precisely the manner for it to have the most powerful impact,” Owens concluded.
Marie Clarkson teaches the 18-month to seven-year-olds in three levels: Kindermusik, Our Time, Imagine That! and Young Child. Brenda Wood teaches the birth to 18-month “babies and moms” in Kindermusik Village.
