A few months of hard work and competition between five young ladies came to an end as Kassidy Barker, representing Early FFA, was crowned Miss Brown County Fair Association 2013 at the annual awards and premium sale. This year’s newly crowned Miss Brown County Fair Association was awarded a $2000 scholarship from the Brown County Fair Association, a traveling trophy for her school, a trophy to keep as her own and various other gifts from local merchants.
Kassidy is the daughter of Casey and Heather Barker of Blanket and the sister of Hayden Barker. She is the granddaughter of Robert and Cherita Barker of Early, Tom and Fran Brown of Colorado, Dale and Brenda Hicks of Brownwood, and Gary and Pati Barton of Coleman. She is a senior at Early High School and a member of the Blanket United Methodist Church.
While in school, Kassidy has participated in cross country, track, basketball, golf and tennis. Kassidy is involved in Early FFA and is currently serving as Vice President. She competes in Leadership Development, Ag Issues and Career Development, Skills Team and Public Relations.
Since the third grade, Kassidy has competed in the Brown County Youth Fair, showing horses, pigs and heifers. She has won grand and reserve champion mare, reserve champion gelding and senior heifer and swine showmanship awards.
Kassidy is currently employed at Heartland Childcare in Early. After graduation, she plans to attend Tarleton State University and major in Agricultural Science, eventually planning to become an ag teacher.
The outgoing Miss Brown County Fair Association is Ashley Garrett of Early. She thanked everyone for the opportunity and experience while she served as Miss BCFA in 2012.
Other candidates for Miss BCFA included Taylor Tomme, representing Bangs FFA; Jordyn Senkirik, representing Brownwood 4-H and FFA; Paige Goodwin, representing Brownwood FFA, FCCLA, and the Brown County Sheep Club; and Logan Speck, representing Early FFA. Each contestant was escorted into the sale arena by their fathers.
The first runner up was Logan Speck, who will receive a $1750 scholarship from the BCFA. Second runner up was Jordyn Senkirik, who will also receive a scholarship of $1500. Each of these runner ups were presented a plaque and were also given various gifts from local merchants.
These girls worked hard to prove themselves on five levels: BCYFA Membership Sales, Poise & Appearance, Personality, Public Speaking, and their participation in the Youth Fair.
Membership sales by the Youth Fair Queen competition is the main fundraiser for the Brown County Fair Association and proceeds benefit the upkeep of facilities and enhancement of the premium sale. Memberships were sold for $20/family and also entitled member families to eat free at the annual barbeque that is held during Rodeo Week in June. This year had another record breaking number of memberships.
