On Monday, November 8, the Brownwood Middle School Jr. FFA competed at the Tarleton State University Invitational Leadership Development Contest. The Brownwood Jr. FFA was the only middle school team at the contest and they placed exceedingly well. The contest is held every year for high school students to prepare for the district, area and state competitions.
The Brownwood Jr. FFA competed in four events. The first event was FFA Quiz. In this contest, students study the FFA Manual and answer questions from the manual. Students competing in this event placed 3rd out of 38 teams, only missing 1st place by three points. The team consisted of Kory Owen, Jon Kirbo, Brady Taylor, Cody Richardson, and Carson Cloy.
The next event was Farm Skills Demonstration. This event allows students to pick any aspect of agriculture and choose and demonstrate a skill. This year the students demonstrated Embryo Transfer in beef cattle. The team placed 5th out of 30 and was comprised of Marrisa Blincoe, Paxton Vaughn, Carson McAnally, Sean Ludlow, and Ryan Lewis.
The third contest was Radio Broadcast. In this event, students choose any topic dealing with agriculture and broadcast a radio program discussing the topic. The topic chosen this year was Aquaculture and the students placed 8th out of 30 teams. The radio broadcast team included Jon Tobias, Nicole Gravitt, and Cooper Donathan.
The last contest was the Creed Speaking contest, in which students must memorize the FFA creed and recite it word for word. The creed is five and a-half paragraphs long. Brett Sawyer was the sole competitor from the Brownwood Jr. FFA team. He place 15th out of 39 creed speakers.
Mr. Whitaker, Middle School Ag teacher, said, “I am very proud of our students. They did great competing against high school students.”
