Joy Elizabeth McCoy was born January 7, 1926 to Herschel Scott and Alva Reynolds McCoy. She graduated from Mullin High School. She married Norman Bradley Petty in Dublin, Texas, on March 31, 1945. They moved to Oregon for twelve years. They returned to Texas in 1962 where they started farming and ranching. Together with her husband they owned and operated Petty’s Grocery and Feed Store in Zephyr for forty-nine years. She felt personally responsible for meeting the needs of her customers. She never took vacations or sick days; she worried that a customer might need a gallon of milk. She lived her life as a Christian example for her friends and family. She taught children’s Sunday School for about 60 years. She was the caretaker for her family, children and grandchildren. She played an important part in the lives of many Zephyr children. She worried about them and celebrated for them as if they were a part of her family. In her later years her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life.

She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Poer and husband Arlan of Sanger, a son, Stephen Petty and wife Bobbie of Zephyr, a daughter, Elaine Brown and husband Randy of Santa Anna; six grandchildren; Sharon McLennan, Douglas McLennan, Christy Robinson, Michael Petty, Calvin Brown and Logan Brown; three step grandchildren; Charles Brown, Marsha Harvey and Shannon Herrod; ten great-grandchildren; Jack Robinson, Bradley Robinson, Christopher Robinson, Ashley Robinson, Tristan Petty, Scarlett Petty, Bruce Brown, Brock Brown, Brad Brown, and Mason Brown; and ten step great grandchildren, Lance Vasquez, Sarah Herrod, Jacob Herrod, Cody Brown, Larissa Harvey, Dustin Harvey, Jarod Herrod, William Brown, Brittany Brown, and Chelcie Brown.

She is survived by two sisters, Dave Blankenship of Coleman, and Billie LaBounty and husband Charles of Rockport.

Mrs. Petty was preceded in death by her husband, Norman in 2011, a sister Dealva Chapman, and a brother H.S. McCoy.
