After winning the Republican primary and having no opponent file against her in the November election, Cheryl Jones was appointed and sworn into the office of District Clerk by 35th District Court Judge Stephen Ellis on Monday.

Jones has served five years as the assistant district court coordinator and was appointed Monday to the office of district clerk after Jan Brown tendered an early resignation, which Judge Ellis accepted as of June 30th.  Jones will take office on Tuesday, July 1, 2014.  Judge Ellis explained that she will continue to help the court as they try to find an employee to replace her.

Prior to working in the district court, she worked as a legal assistant to Darrell and Stephen Haynes at Haynes Law Firm, P.C.  Jones also worked as a substitute teacher in Special Education for Early ISD and served as a behavior specialist there.

“It is bittersweet that she won the primary,” said Judge Ellis, explaining that although they are very proud for Jones, that the district court will be losing their assistant court coordinator.

Jones, formerly Cheryl Throckmorton, grew up in Houston and has lived Brown County for more than 26 years. She is married to Mike Jones and lives in Early. Jones is the proud mother of three, stepmother of two, and grandmother of three.  She is an active member of the First Baptist Church in Early, Texas.  She is a member of TACA (Texas Association of Court Administration) and is very involved with the ICM (International Court Management) program of the Texas Center for the Judiciary.

After being sworn in as district clerk on Monday, Jones said a few words.

“First of all, I’d like to say what a privilege and honor it is,” said Jones.  “Jan has been such a dynamic and amazing woman.  She has been a sterling example of what a district clerk should be,” Jones stated.  “I just want to let you know that I am going to work very hard to keep the confidence of the people of Brown County and trust that they have placed in me.”

Jones stated that the district clerk’s office will “continue to promote the public confidence by promoting the very highest level of courtesy and efficiency to the people of Brown County.”

Although she is very excited to begin her tenure as district clerk, Jones stated that she will miss working in the district court office.

“I am going to miss Judge Ellis.  I appreciate you giving me the chance to work for you.  I’m going to miss the rest of you as well,” Jones said to her coworkers.  “It’s not very often that you get a chance to work with people like yourselves.”
