John R. McRorey, 87, of San Saba, Texas, passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2013 in Goldthwaite, Texas.
He was born February 24, 1926 in Colony Community, San Saba County to Lennie Lou Parks McRorey and John Floyd McRorey. On August 7, 1948, John R. McRorey and Joycelyn Ward were married. They made their home in Cherokee, where John R. enjoyed farming and ranching. They later retired to their home in San Saba. He served as county judge for 7 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as elder.
John R. served in the United States Navy World War II, SLU#38, GRO PAC II, from June 1944 to June 1946. One of his vivid memories was celebrating his 19th birthday February 24th, 1945, aboard ship, supporting the U.S. Marines during the battle for Iwo Jima where the flag was raised on Mt. Suribachi.
His hobbies included black and white photography and wood working along with being a marksman and loading his own ammunition.
He is survived by his wife, Joycelyn McRorey of San Saba; sister-in-law, Barbara Sloan of Coppell, TX; brother-in-law, Jimmy Ward of San Saba; nieces, Claudia Zinser of Coppell, TX and Jan Hornick of Australia; nephews, David Ward of Mullin, TX, Ted Ward of Midland, TX, and Wesley Ward of Midland, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, John R. McRorey, Jr.
The family will receive friends at the Blaylock Funeral Chapel, Saturday, July 6, 2013, 4:00-5:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 7, 2013, 3:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Drew Harrison officiating. Interment will follow at the High Valley Cemetery in Bend, Texas.
