Funeral services for John P. Thornton, Jr., 97, of Brownwood will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, July 8, 2016 in the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Eastlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM prior to the service. Mr. Thornton passed away Friday, July 1, 2016.
John P. Thornton, Jr. was born February 11, 1919 in Blackwater, Missouri to John and Mary (Roles) Thornton. He was a graduate of Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, and he married Fern Vaughan on December 29, 1941 in Granite, Oklahoma. There were married for 74 ½ years. John was a Church of Christ preacher for over 50 years, having ministered in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas. He enjoyed amateur photography, camping, hiking and gardening.
John leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Fern, of Brownwood; son, Stephen V. Thornton of Riverton, Wyoming; two grandchildren, Lara T. Dudek of Dripping Springs and Brian Thornton of Santa Clara, California; two great grandchildren, Isabelle Dudek and Nicholas T. Dudek of Dripping Springs; one sister, Raylene Larsen of Brandon, Florida; and many nieces, nephews and loved ones.He was preceded in death by one daughter, Susan Thornton; his parents; and two sisters, La Vonne Geer and Marilyn Whitelaw.
