wrightJohn Allen Wright, 79, passed away on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Songbird Lodge in Brownwood, Texas.  He was born May 31, 1933 in Ganado,Texas to Frank T. and Stella Doerr Wright, who preceded him in death.

Funeral services for John Allen Wright will be held Monday June 04, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with Ted Kell officiating. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

John married the love of his life, Joanna Gray, of Llano, December 23, 1958, and they remained by each others side until his death. They adopted two children, Robert and Jana, who brought much joy to their lives.

John graduated from Luling High School, Luling, Texas. He earned his Associates Degree from Southwest Texas Junior College, Uvalde, Texas, in 1953. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served in California and Korea until being honorably discharged in 1956. Upon his discharge he attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College, San Marcos, TX, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Vocational Agriculture in May, 1958. John was proud to have received his Masters of Science from Texas A&M University in 1962.

John worked for the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He served across Texas at offices in Cotulla, Haskell, San Saba, Snyder, Archer City, Amarillo, settling at Brownwood in 1978, where he remained until retiring. After his retirement he worked for and volunteered with several local businesses and organizations. He was a past member of the San Saba Jaycees, serving one year as president. He had been a longtime member of the Pecan Valley Kiwanis Club, holding a number of offices.

John’s life was marked by his faith and service to God. He was a member of the Austin Avenue Church of Christ, Brownwood. He served first as a deacon and adult Bible class teacher, then as an elder from 1988-2003. He also served for 20 years on the Board of Directors for Cherokee Home for Children where he was actively involved in activities with the kids.

Included in John’s many interests was a love of the outdoors and sports. He had played high school and college football and was an enthusiastic Dallas Cowboys fan. He raised cattle for many years, finally developing an outstanding herd of his favorite breed, the Black Brangus. John was an avid hunter specializing in the pursuit of Texas whitetail deer, and his interest in other game such as birds, mule deer, elk and others took him to Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, New Mexico, Wyoming, Canada and New Zealand. John was an active member of the NRA and cherished his Second Amendment Rights.

John is survived by his wife, Joanna, of the home; son Robert, of Ponca City, OK; daughter Jana and granddaughter Jakayla, of Brownwood; brother Larry and wife Barbara of London, TX; brother Fred and wife Gradene of Kerrville, TX; sister Lynette Biediger and husband Claude of Bandera, TX; and many nieces, nephews, and their families.
