Graveside services for Jerry C. Spain, 79, of Brownwood will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Greenleaf Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 6-7 PM Tuesday at the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel.  He was a Catholic and member of St. Mary’s Queen of Peace Church.

The son of Clyde A. Spain and Audra Egger Spain, Jerry was born September 28, 1937 in Brownwood.  He graduated from Pasadena High School in 1956.  After graduating from Howard Payne University, he began his teaching career in Crystal City, Texas.  In1964 he earned his Master of Education at Howard Payne while teaching at San Saba High School where he later became assistant superintendent of schools.  In 1974, he began teaching in New Braunfels and working on administrative certification at Southwest Texas.  He also began doctoral work at the University of Texas in Austin.  He returned to Brownwood and completed his teaching career with the Brownwood ISD in 1990.

Jerry’s passion was history and travel.  He made numerous trips to Europe, Central America, Africa and the Middle East.

Organizations in which he had membership include the Sons of the American Revolution, the Sons of the Republic of Texas, San Jacinto Descendants Association both as a member and state registrar.  He was also a life member of the Sons of Confederate veterans organization and the Sons and Daughters of the Province of West Florida.  He also served many years as vice-chairman of the Brown County Historical Commission and was a past president of the Brown County Historical Society.

Jerry served many years on the Brownwood Planning and Zoning Commission and the Brownwood Zoning Board of Adjustment.  He also served on the board for Greenleaf Cemetery.

Mr. Spain is survived by a sister, Frances Stovall, a niece Stephanie Stovall and a nephew Mitch Stovall and wife Shanna of Corinth, Texas and their two children, Abby and Si.

He was predeceased by a sister Wilda Spain in 1941 and his parents Clyde Spain in 1992 and Audra Spain in 2003.
