Honored for being a man who over his lifetime has represented the values of the Scouts, O.C. “Putter” Jarvis was named the 2012 Distinguished Citizen by the Boy Scouts of America, Texas Trails Council Tuesday at a dinner in his honor at the Brownwood Coliseum.
Dr. Don Newbury served as master of ceremonies and explained that Jarvis is a man who is real, continuously looks up, and believes greatly in everyone. Living by the Good Book and applying it to his life, Newbury also emphasized that Jarvis has always represented scouting principles throughout his life, especially the first line of the Boy Scout oath, “on my honor I will do my best.”
According to the Scout Law, “a Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent.” All of which friends and family explained in a tribute video that Jarvis has represented throughout his life no matter what the circumstances.
Jarvis was presented with the Distinguished Citizen award and the North Star Award, an honor similar in prestige to the Silver Beaver Award, which was first introduced in 2011. According to the BSA, the North Star Award is an award for “non-Scouters” which gives councils, areas, regions, and the national council opportunity to “recognize individuals for significant contributions.”
President of the Texas Trails Council Steve Ellis introduced Jarvis and narrated the meaning of each award presented. Area Director for the Southern Region Rob Hofmann presented the Distinguished Citizen award. Dennis Graham, a member of the Texas Trails Council Board of Directors and committee chairman for the dinner, along with Senior District Executive Doug Moore presented Jarvis with the North Star Award certificate and medallion.
In his acceptance, Jarvis recounted significant accomplishments of others who have contributed to the growth and success of Brownwood along with specific events which have shaped Brownwood’s past and will continue to have a role in Brownwood’s future as a community.
