James William “Chick” Simpson, age78, of Brownwood passed away Tuesday at the Brownwood Senior Care Center following a lengthy illness.

He was born December 26, 1939 in Blanket, Texas the son of the late James Arlie Simpson and Lorine Caldwell Purcell Simpson.  He attended schools at Grosvenor and Sidney and worked most of his life as a mechanic retiring after more than 50 years as owner of Chick’s Auto.  He was a former youth baseball coach and loved to hunt and fish.  He will be remembered as a friend to everyone he met.  He was a longtime member of the Milton Avenue Baptist Church and had been a resident of Brownwood since 1954 moving from Grosvenor.

He is survived by four sons, Jimmy Simpson and wife Buffy, Arlie Simpson and wife Dee Dee, Donald “Dew” Simpson and wife Cindy, and Stacy V. Simpson all of Brownwood, a daughter, Belinda Brown and husband Thomas of Brownwood, two brothers, Edward L Simpson of Owens and Randy Purcell of May, and a sister, Betty Chambers of May.

Also surviving are twenty grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Brenda, a brother, Stanley Purcell,  two sisters, Judy Kizer and Peggy Waddle, and a great granddaughter, McKinley Cummings.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Saturday in the Davis Morris Funeral Chapel with Pastor David Barnum officiating.  Burial will follow in the Greenleaf Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 12pm until service time.
