James “Jim” Richard Hartley, age 72, of Brookesmith passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2015, with loved ones by his side.
Private Family Graveside Services for Jim will be held at a later date at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Blaylock Funeral Home of Brownwood.
Jim and his identical twin brother were born on January 3, 1943, to James Robert and Juanita (Drinkard) Hartley in Crystal City, Texas. Jim married his soul mate, Sandra Ross Hartley, on August 10, 1962, in Treasure Island, California. They had three daughters, Valerie, Susan, and Leigh. Jim joined the United States Navy in 1960, he was stationed several places in the United States and all over Europe. He retired as a Senior Chief after 20 years. He was very proud and honored to be a veteran and serve his country. After the Navy, Jim became a Parole and Probation Officer in Las Vegas for 10 years and then retired. Jim and Sandra moved back to Texas after retirement and bought a piece of land between Brookesmith and Winchell and built their home. Jim enjoyed playing golf, playing Hold ‘em dominos with family and beating them every time, and the rural living. Jim was a man of integrity and high morals that he passed on to his children and grandchildren.Jim is survived by his wife and soul mate of 53 years, Sandra Hartley of Brookesmith; daughters, Valerie Hammer and husband Jeff of Las Vegas, NV, Susan Hartley of Abilene, Leigh Colston and husband Mike of Brownwood; grandchildren, Sara Atencio and husband Anthony, Jared Blanton and wife Brittney, Natasha Goerdel, Korey Davis and Dara Stout, and Stephanie Goerdel; 2 great-grandkids, Brayden Middleton and Darrell Stout; and sister, Joy Dukes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Robert Hartley and Juanita Gasswiet; and brother, Jerry Hartley.
