hpuarticlepic4The Howard Payne men’s soccer team was lead by Jaime Benitez with two first half goals to take the 3-0 win over McMurry University Friday afternoon. 

The first goal came when brothers connected; Dennis Benitez fed brother Jaime Benitez a ball in the box for a 1-0 lead in the fifteenth minute.

Five minutes later, Jaime Benitez snuck a ball underneath the opposing keeper’s legs to extend the Yellow Jackets lead 2-0.

The remainder of the first half the score stayed the same. Howard Payne out shot McMurry in the first seven to three, corner kicks where the same, both teams with two.

The second half was very competitive, until with 1:20 left in the game, Chris Martinez sealed the game for HPU with a goal assisted Brice Reusink.

Francisco Medina kept a clean sheet recording two saves on the day.

HPU out shot McMurry 18 to 7, nine of which were on goal to McM’s two.

The win takes the Jackets to 8-6 on the year and 7-4 in the American Southwest Conference. McMurry falls to 2-9-3 overall and 0-7-3 in conference.

HPU’s next game is Saturday, Oct. 24, at 3pm at home, against ASC top rated Hardin-Simmons University.
