jacketbasketball_logoKERRVILLE, Texas – Brandon Irwin’s three-pointer at the buzzer does not fall and the Yellow Jackets lose to Schreiner University 83-82 Saturday at the Eddington Center.

Schreiner used a 16-0 run to open up a 32-19 lead midway through the first half. The Jackets battled back cut it to six but was still behind 50-40 at halftime.

It remained about the same for most of the second half till the Jackets made a run with seven minutes left. A jumper by Rashad Deal brought the Jackets to within two, 73-71 with 3:13 left.

A three-point play by Brandon Irwin with :47 second left gave Howard Payne their first lead of the game at 80-79.
After both teams hit two free-throws, Schreiner made a layup with 12 seconds left to take a 83-82 lead. Irwin’s three point attempt at the buzzer was no good and the Jackets fell 83-82.

Schreiner scored 50 first half points but was held to just 33 in the second by HPU. The Jackets committed only nine turnovers while forcing Schreiner into 14.

Brandon Irwin led all scorers with 32 points and seven rebounds. Joshua Dada added 12 points and a team high nine rebounds.

Schreiner was led by Darren Smith with 27 points, Ethan Catalani had 17, Riley Battle had 15 and Tyrie Prince had 14.

HPU now stands at 4-13 overall and 3-10 in conference play. Schreiner is 8-9 overall and 6-7 in ASC action.

Howard Payne will be back at home next week taking on Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday and Concordia Texas on Saturday.
