The Howard Payne University football team allowed 21 second quarter points and fell to nationally ranked Louisiana College 42-14 at Gordon Wood Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Louisiana College scored first on a Daron Bartholomew 2 yd run just three minutes into the game. The Jackets would answer back and tie the game on a Rick Henderson 7 yd run with six minutes to play in the first quarter.
A Darnell Williams 15 yd pass from LC QB Jamie Bunting gave them the lead back to close out the first quarter. LC then rattled out three second quarter TDs to bring their lead to 35-7 at halftime.
LC extended their lead in the third on a Ryan Montague 50 yd pass from Bunting. It was Montague’s third TD of the game.
The Jackets did get another score in with 10:19 left in the fourth when Adrian Lighteard scored on a 24 yd pass from Thomas Head.
Lighteard had five carries for 58 yards and two catches for 37 yards and a TD. Cote Schacherl had eight punts for 344 yards (43.0 avg) which included a long of 65 yards.
Victor Gonzales had 11 tackles (8 solo) for the Jackets. Eugene Jackson led LC with six (4 solo).
LC’s Montague had 10 carries for 84 yards, two TDs rushing and one receiving. QB Jamie Bunting was 22 of 30 with 1 INT for 298 yards and 3 TDs.
Howard Payne is now 1-6 overall and 1-4 in ASC action, while LC improves to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in conference.
The Yellow Jackets will be in Clinton, Miss next week to face Mississippi College.
