PINEVILLE, Texas – Adrian Lighteard rushed for 134 yards for Howard Payne University as the Yellow Jackets fall 38-6 to the Louisiana College Wildcats in conference action Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets gained just 64 yards of total offense (59 rushing) in the first half and found themselves behind 14-3 at halftime. The Jackets finished the game 187 yards of total offense (173 rushing).
It was the 17 point third quarter for Louisiana College that was the big difference in the game spurred by two HPU fumbles.
HPU’s first half score came on a Joshua Martinez 27-yard field goal with 13:27 left in the second quarter.
The Jackets forced a LC three and out to start the third quarter and Martinez would then hit his second 27-yard field goal of the day to bring the score to 14-6 LC.
LC then score in three plays on their next possession to make the score 21-6. Two consecutive HPU fumbles would lead to a Louisiana College touchdown and field goal. 31-6 LC with 3:26 left in the third quarter.
The Wildcats added another touchdown with 9:10 to play in the game, Final 38-6 LC.
J.D. King led the HPU defense with nine tackles, three for loss and two sacks. Safety Josh Eppler finished with eight tackles. Eppler also punted eight times for 338 yards a 42.2 average, a long of 49 yards.
The Jackets are now 4-0 overall and 0-1 in conference play, Louisiana College is 3-1 overall and 1-0 in ASC action. Howard Payne will play next week at home versus Hardin-Simmons University at 1:00 pm.
