Howard Payne’s Brandon Irwin scored 30 as the Yellow Jackets nabbed their third win of the year in a 76-69 victory over Schreiner University Thursday night.
The Yellow Jackets shot 49 percent from the floor on 28-57 shooting. HPU went 17 of 23 from the free throw line for 74 percent. Schreiner was held to 36 percent shooting for the game.
The HPU men are led by Brandon Irwin with 30 points and four rebounds. Henry Valladares scored 10 with four boards, and Daniel Bubel added nine points with three boards.
Schreiner’s Trevor Conner got a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. After him three others scored in double digits- Riley Battle 13, David Flannery 13, and Tyrie Prince 11.
HPU got out-rebounded, 48-27, but only commit 12 turnovers for the night, which kept them in the game. Yellow Jackets also got 15 steals on the night, four of them coming from Zane Smith.
HPU improves to 3-15 overall and 3-12 in ASC conference play. Schreiner falls to 3-15 overall and 3-10 in the ASC.
The next game for the Yellow Jackets is at the Coliseum, Jan. 30, at 3 p.m. against Texas Lutheran University.
