hpu_football_logoSEGUIN, Texas – The Howard Payne University football team led after the first quarter 13-7, but Texas Lutheran University scored 44 unanswered points to defeat the Yellow Jackets 13-51 Saturday afternoon.

Texas Lutheran took their opening drive 57 yards in 34 seconds to make the score 0-7 Bulldogs. HPU answered with a 10 play 65 yard drive that ended in a 36 yard Thomas Head pass to D.L. Brake for a TD.

Linebacker Bo Ross would then recover a TLU fumble and return it 12 yards for the TD. The Mitchell Bailey extra point was no good making the score 13-7 HPU with 2:13 left in the first quarter.

It was all TLU from there as the Bulldogs rolled off 44 unanswered points over the next three quarters.

HPU QB Marcus McAdoo had 11 rushes for 64 yards. Thomas Head, who also saw time at QB, was 4 of 8 passing for 58 yards with 2 INTs.

Demetrius Cody play huge on defense for the Jackets with 15 tackles (11 solo), he forced a fumble and also recovered one.

Cote Schacherl had seven punts for 329 yards, a 47.0 avg. He had a long of 61 yards with two touchbacks and one inside the 20 yard line.

TLU QB Mitchell Bunger was 15 of 22 passing for 186 yards and a TD. Dominque Hardaway was the leading rusher with 13 carries for 91 yards and a TD.

The Jackets are now 1-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play. TLU stands at 3-1 overall and 2-0 in ASC action.

Howard Payne will be back at home next week taking on McMurry University at 2:00 pm.
