Poor shooting for the Howard Payne men’s basketball team Thursday resulted in an 81-63 loss to Texas Lutheran University at the Brownwood Coliseum.
The Jackets shot only 28 percent (20 of 71) from the floor in the game, and shot 65 percent (17 of 26) from the free throw line. For the Bulldogs, it was a different story, as they shot 52 percent (33 of 64) from the floor.
HPU made only one of their first 13 shot attempts in the game, allowing TLU to jump out to an early 12-2 lead. From their TLU’s lead stayed about the same, with the score at the half, 36-25 TLU.
In the second, TLU took control and opened up a 22 point lead off a dunk by Isaac Williams with 6:27 remaining in the game to take the score to 55-77.
TLU dominated in the paint scoring 46 of their 81 points below the basket, and 32 points from their bench.
HPU Center, Kanyon Payne, had a solid game, with nine points, 11 rebounds, one block and two steals. Brandon Irwin led the Jackets with 19.
TLU’s Williams had 23 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Behind him was Michael Flores with 17 points and three rebounds.
The Jackets fall to 5-17 overall and 4-14 in the American Southwest Conference. TLU goes to 10-11 overall and pulls to .500 in the ASC at 9-9.
The next game for the Jackets will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Brownwood Coliseum, against Schreiner University.
