hpu_football_logoCLINTON, Miss – The Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets picked off three Mississippi College passes in the first half but the Choctaws went on to win 21-34 Saturday afternoon at Robinson-Hale Stadium.

Howard Payne’s Demetrius Cody, Maurice Young and Bo Ross picked off Mississippi College passes in the first half but MC still gained 194 yards passing in the half. MC QB Tommy Reyer totaled 306 yards on 15 completions and 4TDs in the game.

Mississippi College scored on the opening drive on a 6 yard Tommy Reyer pass to Demetrius Randolph.

On the next MC possession, HPU’s Demetrius Cody intercepted a pass and returned it down to the MC 5 yard line. After two false starts, the Jackets would score on a Thomas Head 14 yard pass to Adrian Lighteard with 5:46 left in the first quarter.

With a MC kickoff return into HPU territory, MC score on their first play to regain the lead. A Reyer 43 yard pass to DeMarrion Hughes made the game 7-14 MC.

Thomas Head would tie the game at 14-14 on a 23 yard run with just 43 second remaining in the first half.

The Yellow Jacket defense could not hold and MC tacked on another score just before the half with Reyer founding Hughes again for their second 43 yard TD pass of the game. A missed extra point made it 14-20 MC at the half.

MC extended their lead to 14-27 in the third quarter with a Reyer 44 yard pass to Steven Knight.

The Jackets would bring the game to within six, 21-27 on a Lighteard 3 yard run. The touchdown capped an 11 play 43 yard drive by the Jackets that took over 13 minutes off the clock. Lighteard finished the game with 135 yards rushing on 22 carries. He also caught two passes for 29 yards and a TD.

MC again created so distance scoring on a Knight three yard run with 9:46 left in the game. 21-34 MC

DeMarrion Hughes caught three passes for 135 yards and TDs for MC. Steven Knight had 16 carries for 87 yards and one TD.

The Jackets now stands at 1-7 overall and 1-5 in ASC action. MC improves to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Howard Payne will be back in Brownwood nest Saturday versus Mary Hardin-Baylor at 2:00 pm.
