The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets fell late in the game to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Sunday afternoon 11-2.
HPU started off with a one run lead in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single from Ryan Breeding sending in Will Garlick to score, but UMHB answered back with a run in the second to tie it up at 1-1.
No runs for either team would be scored until the top of the seventh when The Cru made it out of the inning with seven runs scored and an 8-1 lead over the Jackets.
Putting up three more runs in the ninth inning, UMHB held the lead to end the game. However, HPU attempted to rally back in the bottom of the ninth with a RBI double from Nick Loving scoring Rey Rosales, but still fell short in a final score of 11-2.
Although only giving up one run in his six innings of work, HPU’s Billy Ray Cruz was credited with the loss, while UMHB’s Chance Ryan would get the win in a full nine innings.
HPU will take on UMHB in a double header at 1:00 p.m. on Monday in Brownwood to finish out the series that was rescheduled due to the weather.
