The Howard Payne football team ended their season with a 60-21 loss to Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field.
The Yellow Jackets were held to just 107 total offense and scoreless in the first half by the Lobos. Sul Ross totaled 351 yards in the first half while picking off Howard Payne twice.
After being down 33-0 at the half, the Jackets would score on a Zarron Dove 2 yard run with 4:27 left in the third, 33-7 SRSU. The Joshua Martinez kick capped a 13 play, 81 yard drive taking 5:07 off the clock.
Sul Ross answered with a 12 yard TD pass on their next possession to make it 39-7 Sul Ross.
HPU’s Victor Gonzales took the ensuing kickoff back 99 yards for a touchdown, the Martinez kick would make it 39-14 Sul Ross. Gonzales had a career day in kick returns with eight for 239 yards and the TD.
After a Devin Johnson interception, the Jackets drove down and scored on a 4 yard Zarron Dove run. The kick made it 39-21 Sul Ross.
That would be as close as the Jackets would get and three more Sul Ross scores brought the game to its 60-21 final score.
Richard Young was 16-for30 passing for 147 yards with three interceptions. Colby Mica had four catches for 65 yards.
Jason Disney led HPU with eight tackles, all solo and two for loss. Xavier McFalls finished with six tackles all solo, one for loss.
The Jackets finish the season at 4-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Sul Ross finishes their year at 2-8 overall and 1-4 in ASC play.
