hpu_football_logoMARSHALL, Texas – Howard Payne University’s Adrian Lighteard rushed for 113 yards in a 27-7 season finale loss to East Texas Baptist University Saturday afternoon.

Adrian Lighteard had 113 yards on 21 carries as the Jackets posted 280 yards of total offense. ETBU QB Sed Harris had 11 carries for 145 yards. Harris also was 16 of 20 passing for 245 yards.

Howard Payne scored the first touchdown of the game with 12:32 left in the second quarter on a Lighteard one yard run. The score capped a 13 play 73 yard drive that took 7:19 off the clock.

ETBU tie the game at 7-7 just about a minute later with a Sed Harris 70 yard run.
ETBU scored 20 unanswered points on the second half. The HPU offense struggled to score fumbling twice and throwing one interception in the second half.

NCAA III punting leader Cote Schacherl punted solid with four punts for a 47.5 average. Schacherl had a new career high long punt of 73 yards in the second quarter.

The Jackets finishes the season at 1-9 overall and 1-7 in ASC action. HPU’s last week is an open date. ETBU with one more game to play is 4-5 overall and 3-4 in conference.
