qbarticlepicTwo Howard Payne and one American Southwest Conference record are broken but the Yellow Jackets fall in triple overtime 45-51 to Louisiana College at Gordon Wood Stadium Saturday afternoon.

HPU QB Zach Hubbard broke the HPU and American Southwest Conference record for total yards in a game with 608 (532 passing, 76 rushing), the previously record was held by HPU’s Adam King (vs ETBU in 2004). Hubbard had 532 yards passing also eclipsed the HPU record for yards passing in a game previously held by Adam King with 512 yards (vs ETBU in 2004). Hubbard was just one yard shy of breaking the ASC record of 533 yards passing in a game. 

Louisiana College held a 7-10 halftime lead and extended that led to 14-24 by the end of the third quarter.

Howard Payne mounted a comeback starting with an 18-yard TD pass from Hubbard to Trevor Kleine to make it 21-24. LC got in the endzone on a 5-yard run to bring it back to 21-31 with 10:39 left in regulation.

HPU then scored on their next two possessions on a 43 yard field goal from Mitchell Bailey and 14 yard pass from Hubbard to Tre Mason to tie the game at 31-31 with 4:57 left. 

LC missed a field goal on the next drive giving HPU a shot to win the game in regulation. After driving down to the LC 25 yard line with seconds remaining, Hubbard threw an interception and the game went to overtime. 

Both teams traded TDs in the first two overtimes. LC scored in the third and missed on the two-point conversion. HPU was unable to answer on their next possession and fell 45-51 in the third overtime.

Along with Hubbard’s 532 yards passing, he threw five touchdowns passing and had one rushing TD with two interceptions. Tre Mason led the HPU receiving crew with 7 catches for 104 yards and 3 TD. He was followed closely by Corbin Young with 7 catches for 94 yards. Jared Shaw and Trevor Kleine also had TD catches. 

LC QB Ben McLaughlin threw for 402 yards and 3 TD.  Jordan Rideaux led all rushers with 9 carries for 147 yards and a TD.

Dustin McClure led all tacklers with 15 along with Aaron Martin and Kevin Reyna with 12 each. DE Joey Lewis had a great all around game on defense with 11 tackles (2 for loss), 2 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. 

Taylor Cottano led LC with 8 tackles and Lance Stone had 2 INT. 

Howard Payne falls to 3-4 overall and 1-4 in ASC play, while Louisiana College improves to 4-3, and 3-2 in ASC action. 

The Yellow Jackets will travel to Clinton, Miss next Saturday to take on Mississippi College.
