Howard Payne men’s soccer team fell to Schreiner University 3-0 in the first round of the 2009 American Southwest Conference Tournament at the Cru Sports Complex Friday afternoon.
In the first half Schreiner first broke through in the 20th minute when SU’s Tanner Overstake ripped a ball from 35 yards out to beat HPU keeper Francisco, making the score 1-0.
The first half ended with HPU having 4 corners to SU’s 0. Fouls were 4 HPU and 2 SU, HPU out shot Schreiner 4 to 2.
Four minutes into the second half Schreiner double the lead with a combo play in the box from SU’s Phillip Anderson to Adam Harvey, making to the game 2-0.
Jaime Benitez received a red card at the 56 minute mark. So HPU was down one man.
Only 6 minutes later Schreiner’s Stephen Gonzalez received his second yellow and red card to make the play on the field ten men for each team.
Each team, one man down, Adam Harvey in the 68th struck again sticking another goal for the Mountaineers to make the final score 3-0.
HPU Goal Keeper, Francisco Medina had two saves in the game. SU’s Matt Johnson had 5 saves, allowing no goals. Each team had 5 shots on goal.
Six total cards were handed out in the game, 4 yellow and 2 red, each team had three.
HPU ends their season at (9-8-1) and (8-4-1) in the ASC. Yellow Jackets made their first post-season appearance and record their first winning season in the program’s history.
