MARSHALL, Texas – Howard Payne senior kicker Mitchell Bailey hits three fields in a 52-28 loss to conference opponent East Texas Baptist Saturday afternoon at Ornelas Stadium.
It was six second half TDs by East Texas Baptist that broke open a 13-10 HPU halftime lead. ETBU QB Seth Hubbard threw for 450 yards and was 39 of 64 on attempts.
After a scoreless first quarter, a 53 yard pass from Thomas Head to Karl Stewart down to the ETBU 5 yard line set up a Zarron Dove 5 yard TD run with 8:24 left in the second quarter.
On the next HPU possession, Mitchell Bailey would hit a 44 yard field goal to bring the score to 10-0 HPU with 5:18 to play in the first half.
ETBU then hit a 30 yard field goal with 4:18 left in the second and then tie the game at 10-10 on 11 yard TD pass with 41 seconds left in the opening half.
Then an ETBU onside kick would be recovered by HPU. ETBU committed a personal foul on the next play to give the Jackets good field position for a field goal attempt with seconds remaining in the half. Bailey then hit his second field goal of the half this time from 42 yards out to give HPU a 13-10 halftime lead.
ETBU would score on their first two possessions of the second half to gain a 24-10 lead with 8:56 left in the third quarter.
In between more ETBU TDs, Bailey would hit his third field goal of the game, a 41 yard field goal with 4:25 left in the third quarter. The Jackets would also score on twice on Jake Burhalter runs from 21 and 4 yards in the fourth quarter.
Scoring three TDs in each of the third and fourth quarters, ETBU outscored Howard Payne 42-15 in the second half to defeat the Jackets 52-28.
Adrian Lighteard had 62 yards on 16 carries. QB Jake Burhalter had five rushes of 39 yards and two TDs. Burhalter was also 8 of 14 passing for 90 yards. Starting QB Thomas Head was 13 of 33 for 197 yards and one interception. Xavier McFalls led the HPU defense with 12 tackles.
Howard Payne is now 1-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. ETBU stands at 2-5 and 1-3 in conference. HPU will be back at home next week versus the University of Mary
