The Howard Payne football team was held to just 50 yards rushing and was sacked four times in a 51-20 loss to Hardin-Simmons University Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets were held to less than 100 yards of total offense in the first half as the Cowboys gained a 28-0 halftime advantage.
The Jackets would finally get on the scoreboard in the 3rd with 5:57 on the clock when Aroldo Nandin scored on a one yard run (Joshua Martinez kick failed). The HPU drive took 14 plays over 86 yards with 5:30 off the clock. 28-6 HSU.
With 1:17 left in the 3rd, HSU then ,blocked a HPU punt for a safety to make the score 30-6 HSU.
HPU’s Zarron Dove would score the first of two Jacket 4th quarter touchdowns on a one yard run with 11:16 to play (Joshua Martinez kick good) capping a 10 plays, 58 yard drive. 30-13 HSU.
After a HSU seven yard TD run and extra point, Richard Young would run it in from one yard out to make the score 37-20 following the Martinez extra point, Hardin-Simmons added two late quarter scores to bring the game to its 51-20 final.
HPU’s Richard Young was 27-for-41 passing for 253 yards with two interceptions. Young was also sacked three times. Caisson Montieth was 2-for-3 passing for 15 yards and was sacked once.
Kevin Domingue had five catches for 54 yards followed by Colby Mica with six catches for 43 yards.
Adrian Hopkins and Jason Disney led the HPU defense with 11 tackles each. Disney also had two tackles for loss. Donald Preston followed with nine tackles, 1.5 for loss and a sack.
Kerry Sloan had 142 yards and two TDs for HSU on 22 carries. QB Weston Garner was 20-for-26 for 222 yards and three TDs. Jessie Ramos had eight catches for 161 yards and two TDs.
Howard Payne is now 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Hardin-Simmons stands at 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference. The Yellow Jackets will travel to Louisiana College next Saturday in Pineville, LA. It will be a 1:00 pm kickoff.
