hpu_football_logoThe Howard Payne University football team ended the 2010 season with a 24-0 loss to East Texas Baptist University Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium. 

Howard Payne was 0 for 3 in the red zone, with a missed field goal, an interception and loss of downs. ETBU had 20 penalties for 162 yards after coming into the game only averaging seven flags.

It was also senior day as Zach Hubbard, Cody Hambrick, Dustin McClure Gavin Middleton, Aaron Alvarado, Walter Pam, and Leon Grayer played their last collegiate game.

ETBU scored six minutes into the game when QB, Sed Harris completed a 60-yard pass to Tony Cavness down the left sideline for the early 7-0 lead.

HPU would have a great chance to score when a Cote Schacherl punt would be fumbled at the ETBU 20-yard line and recovered by HPU’s Brandon Roberts. After getting a first down at the 13-yard line, HPU would stall. That set up a 32-yard field goal for Mitchell Bailey that would be missed and keep the game at 7-0 with 1:34 left in the first quarter.

The Jacket’s next two drives combined for 28 total yards and ended in a Schacherl punt both times.

ETBU next score came with 34 seconds left in the first half on a Brett Peddicord 32-yard field after a 15 play, 66-yard drive that took 4:41 off the clock to make the score 10-0.

HPU ended the first half with 38 yardsof total offense to ETBU’s 115.

In the second half, the ETBU Tigers came out and scored on their first two drives of the half to make the score 24-0.

The first came after HPU stopped the Tigers at the 1-yard line, but the play was called back on an offside call. ETBU would take the second chance and convert with Jair Stover punching it in from 1-yard out.

The second touchdown came on 3rd and 16 when ETBU QB, Sed Harris scored on a 45-yard scramble.

On the next two possessions for HPU they would get to the red zone. On the first trip it ended in a loss of downs, and the second ended with a Hubbard interception.

HPU was 2 for 12 on third down conversions in the game along with allowing eight sacks.

Two seniors had an outstanding day. WR Cody Hambrick recorded 13 receptions for 109 yards, and LB Dustin McClure had 19 total tackles with one for loss.

HPU punter Cote Schacherl averaged 39 yards per punt, with a long of 57 and one inside the 20.

ETBU QB, Harris had 116 yards passing and 137 yards rushing, with one touchdown through the air and one on the ground.

HPU ends their season at 2-8 overall and 1-7 in the American Southwest Conference. ETBU goes to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in ASC with one game to play.
