The Howard Payne football team ended the 2009 season with a 42-7 loss to East Texas Baptist University at Ornelas Stadium Saturday afternoon.
At the half, the game was 35-7 in favor of East Texas Baptist and only one more touchdown was scored early in the forth.
The teams started off the game swapping touchdowns. Howard Payne’s only score was on a one-yard dive from Zach Hubbard with 10:18 left in the first quarter. The drive took up 3:04 on eight plays, making the score 7-7.
Following that drive, ETBU went 99 yards down the field and stole the lead 14-7 along with the momentum of the game.
In the second quarter ETBU outscored HPU 21-0. Making the score 35-7 at the half.
Not until early in the forth did ETBU score again. The score came off a 16-yard Seth Hubbard run, Seth being brother of HPU QB, Zach Hubbard. That score would cap the game 42-7.
ETBU was six yards short of having three players with a 100 yards rushing. Leading the pack was ETBU QB Seth Hubbard with 136 yards and a touchdown. He was 6-13 passing for 128 yards and a touchdown.
HPU’s Zach Hubbard had 248 yards passing on 21 of 38 attempts and had one interception. WR Jared Shaw led 3 catches for 67 yards and Tre Mason added 5 catches for 42 yards.
On defense, Dustin McClure led all with 11 tackles. Behind him was Jake Dezell with 9 and Kevin Reyna with 8.
Howard Payne finishes the 2009 season 4-6 overall and 2-6 in the American Southwest Conference. ETBU finishes at 3-7 overall 3-5 in ASC play.
