hubbardtouchdownjumpAfter their upset against #13 Mississippi College the previous weekend, the Howard Payne football team loses 45-7 to #6 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Quarterback, Zach Hubbard scored the only HPU touchdown and was held under 250 yards for only the second time this season.

Before the first quarter ended, the UMHB tallied up 21 points of offense to HPU’s zero. The first touchdown was on a 67 yard run by UMHB’s Bryson tucker three plays into scrimmage. Five minutes later, it was Tucker again with a seven yard run.


With 2:09 left in the first, UMHB Quarterback Kyle Noack connected with Pi’Dadro Davis for a 32 yard touchdown pass. That left the score at 21-0 UMHB at the end of the first quarter.

Fourteen more points were put up by UMHB in the second quarter, the first touchdown coming when back up Quarterback, LiDarral Bailey hooked up with Bryson Tucker on a quarterback scramble. That score took it to 28-0. Only a minute and a half later, Quincy Daniels ran it in from four yards out to take it to 35-0.

Leading 35-0, it was all UMHB in the first half. They racked up 264 rushing and held the ball 17:52 to Howard Payne’s 12:08.

Three minutes into the second half, UMHB’s Bryson Tucker scored his forth touchdown to make it 42-0.

Down 42, HPU was finally able to get themselves on the board when Zach Hubbard ran five yards and dove into the end zone for a touchdown, capping off a seven play 81 yard drive that took 2:35 off the clock. The touchdown came with 9:58 left in the third quarter.

Howard Payne held UMHB to only a 33 yard field goal in the fourth. The kick came from Alan Munoz to make the final score 45-7, UMHB.

If there was one edge the Jackets had on the Cru, it was in the passing game. Zach Hubbard was 26-53 and 211 yards, accumulating 2 interceptions. Top receiver was senior tight end, Trevor Kleine with 70 yards on four catches, and a long of 25 yards. UMHB, between their two quarterbacks, had 67 yards total.

The running game was a different story; UMHB pounded out 388 yards to Howard Payne’s -5. Tyson Tucker for UMHB had 119 yards rushing, with three touchdowns and one receiving.

Kevin Reyna lead the HPU defense with 14 tackles. Saftey Jordan Pfenenger and Dustin McClure both had 11 tackles respectively. The one sack for the Jackets came from Allen Dixon for a seven yard loss.

Fourteen seniors played their last game at Gordon Wood for the Jackets on Saturday. The seniors being Justin Havard, Jake Dezell, Aaron Martin, Edward Cody, Trevon Kleine, Corbin Young, Kevin Reyna, Cody Lilley, Johnathon Haddock, Lane Wakefield, James Freeman, Josiah Bone, Danny Dudgeon, and Chase Reneau. Student assistant coach Will Cockril was also a part of the group.

HPU stands at (4-5) overall and (2-5) in the American Southwest Conference, having a chance to end the season at .500. UMHB moves up to (8-1) overall and (6-1) in conference play.

The Jackets next game with be on the road Nov. 14 in Marshall, Texas against East Texas Baptist, the game starts at 1:00.
