The Howard Payne University football team was blanked 56-0 by Hardin-Simmons University spoiling the HPU homecoming at Gordon Wood Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Despite running the same amount of plays as HSU, Howard Payne held the ball six more minutes than the HSU Cowboys.
HPU linebacker Dustin McClure led all tacklers with 10 tackles (4 solo). But it was the HSU’s defense that limited the Yellow Jackets to just 169 yards of total offense. HPU came in averaging 330 yards per game through the air and were held to 83. HSU totaled 513 yards and averaged 7.8 yards per play.
HSU got on the board with 8:37 to play with a 10-yard pass from Justin Feaster. HPU’s Andre Dean fumbled the ensuing kickoff and HSU scored at the 6:31 mark when Feaster completed a 7-yard touchdown pass.
HSU made it 21-0 with :41 to play in the first quarter when Feaster hit Chance McCoy on a 14-yard touchdown pass.
HSU forced a quick punt, blocked it and went 12 yards for a touchdown. It was 28-0 HSU with 14:09 to play in the half.
The Jackets then drove down to the HSU 28-yard line. Howard Payne stalled out and their fourth down conversion fell short turning it over on downs.
Feaster threw another touchdown on the Cowboys’ first possession of the second half, this time a 54-yard TD over the HPU defense. Feaster ended his day on a 16-yard touchdown pass to make it 42-0 with 4:38 to play in the third quarter.
The Jackets had an opportunity to score late and placekick Mitchell Bailey missed on a 35-yard field goal attempt wide left.
HSU with 14:18 to play intercepted a pass and ran it back to the 3-yard line at the end of the third quarter. HSU closed the scoring with a 2-yard run with 3:35 to play.
QB Zach Hubbard was 12 of 26 passing for 60 yards. LB Demetrius Cody added nine tackles for the HPU defense.
Howard Payne falls to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in league play. HSU is now 5-1 on the year and 3-1 in ASC action.
The Jackets will travel next week to Pineville, Louisiana to play Louisiana College. It will be a 4:00 pm kickoff time.
