HPUlogoBELTON, Texas – Tresta Donahoo scored a career high 27 points to lead the Howard Payne University women’s basketball team to a 99-76 victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Thursday evening.

It was a game of runs for Howard Payne as the Lady Jackets outscored UMHB 14-0 midway through the second half to open the game up. HPU led by as much as 24, 89-65 with 5:39 to play.

UMHB had no answer for Tresta Donahoo who scored a career high 27 points and dished out nine assists with just one turnover.

UMHB did outrebound the Lady Jackets 57-45. It was HPU shooting 46% from the field and hitting 10 of 18 three-pointers that UMHB could not match. HPU also forced 26 UMHB turnovers while committing 16 themselves.

Dana Marrs followed Donahoo 27 points with 18 points. Danyel Bradley added 12 points for HPU off the bench. Senae Dillard finished with nine points and a team high seven rebounds.

UMHB was led by Taylor Tucker with 21 points followed by Jovana Miles with 20. Miles also grabbed a game high 14 rebounds. Katelyn Smith added 13 points.

The Lady Jackets improve to 21-3 overall and 16-2 in conference. UMHB falls to 7-16 overall and 6-12 in conference. Howard Payne will finish the regular season at Concordia Texas on Saturday in Austin, Texas at 1:00 pm. Howard Payne will be the host of the 2013 American Southwest Conference women’s basketball tournament February 22-24, bracket to be finalized late Monday evening.


Brandon Gould scored a career high 31 points for the Howard Payne men’s basketball team as the Yellow Jackets upset regionally ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor 75-73 Thursday evening.

Jackets used a 10-0 run to gain a 59-45 lead with 11:50 to play in the game. UMHB chipped away at the Jackets lead to tie the game at 67-67 with three minutes left.

Big shots by Brandon Gould and Christian Davis down the stretch gave the Jackets a 75-72 advantage with under a minute to play. UMHB was 2 of 7 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes.

Ja’Kalan Gayden had a one and one opportunity from the line with three seconds remaining to ice the game but missed the first. The UMHB halfcourt shot at the buzzer came up short and the Jackets claimed the 75-73 upset.

The HPU victory was the first regular season home loss for Mary Hardin-Baylor since December of 2011.

Gould added four assists to his game and career high 31 points. Christian Davis finished with 17 points for the Jackets. Michael Thompson grabbed a team high eight rebounds.

UMHB was led by Kitrick Bell with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Antonie Chaney and Thomas Orr finished with 13 and 12 points respectively.

The Jackets are now 8-16 overall and 6-12 in conference. UMHB falls to 20-4 overall and 16-2 in ASC play. Howard Payne will complete the regular season on Saturday at Concordia University Texas at 3:00 pm.
