jacketbasketball_logoThe Howard Payne University women’s basketball team committed 31 turnovers and fell 60-56 to Concordia University Texas Saturday afternoon in conference action.

Concordia scored 35 points off of 31 Howard Payne turnovers. The Lady Jackets forced 22 Concordia turnovers but only converting for 11 points. HPU did outrebound Concordia 43-31 in the game.

Howard Payne now stands at 16-3 overall and 12-3 in conference. With the win, Concordia takes a one game lead over HPU in the ASC West Division standings and is now 15-3 overall and 13-2 in ASC play.

Concordia shot 55% from the field in the first half and led 35-29 at halftime. The Lady Jackets turned the ball over 19 times in the first half.

Howard Payne battled back in the second and gained a three point advantage 54-51 with 5:29 left in the game. Concordia went on an 8-0 run to gain a 59-54 advantage with 1:04 left in the game. Howard Payne had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds but threw the ball away and fell 60-56.

Dana Marrs led HPU with 15 points and three steals. Roshonda Gayden followed with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Concordia was led by Termeka Canada with 19 points off the bench. Paige Parrish added 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Howard Payne will be back at home the next two weeks. HPU will play Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia Texas next week and then Texas Lutheran and Schreiner the following Thursday and Saturday.

 


 

Howard Payne University got a game high 26 points from Brandon Irwin but it was not enough as Concordia University Texas downed the Yellow Jackets 110-94

Concordia shot 54% from the field in the game to just 46% for Howard Payne. Concordia also hit nine three-pointers to just two for the Yellow Jackets.

Howard Payne falls to 8-11 overall and 6-9 in conference while Concordia improves to 11-8 overall and 9-6 in conference.

The game remained close for most of the first half but Concordia was able to make a run in the closing minutes. Forcing 15 first half turnovers, Concordia held a 51-37 lead at the break.

Concordia pushed their lead to 20 points at the 15 minute mark of the second half.  That would be about as close as the Jackets would get with Concordia winning 110-94.

Brandon Irwin led all scorers with 26 points and seven rebounds. Joshua Dada added a career high 24 points. Brandon Gould finished with 17 points and six assists. Ja’Kalan Gayden grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Quentin Calloway added 17 points off the bench for the Jackets.

Concordia was led by Josh Johnson with 18. Darius Anderson and Henry Riasco each had 16. Darien Harris and Chris McDermott each had 11.

Howard Payne will be back at home the next two weeks. HPU will play Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia Texas next week and then Texas Lutheran and Schreiner the following Thursday and Saturday.
