Brandon Gould scores a career high 25 points as Howard Payne University wins 94-90 over McMurry University. It was the first Yellow Jacket win over McMurry University since Feburary of 2008.
After McMurry gained a 90-89 lead with :20 seconds remaining, Brandon Gould drove the length of the floor and made the layup in traffic to give HPU the lead, 91-90. Gould was 8 of 10 from the field and 8 of 8 from the free-throw line in the game. He also dished out six assists.
McMurry had battled back from a 13 point deficit, 85-72 with 1:30 left in the game. After the Gould layup, it was Brandon Irwin and Bryan Adams who hit key free-throws in the stretch to secure the Howard Payne win 94-90.
Howard Payne improves to 7-7 overall and 5-5 in conference. McMurry falls to 9-4 overall and 5-4 in ASC play.
Brandon Irwin led all scoring with 27 points for HPU. Henry Valladares came off the bench and added 10 points. JaKalan Gayden had 11 rebounds and five blocks to go along with seven points.
Bryce Hill led McMurry with 22 points. Conner Robinson had 17 points and 15 rebounds. Bryant Taylor had 13 points with seven assists, Steven Jones added 11.
Howard Payne will be at home again on Saturday with a conference game against Hardin-Simmons University at 3:00 pm.
Brittany Roberson dished out seven assists for Howard Payne University leading the Lady Jackets down McMurry University 67-57 in conference action Thursday evening.
Despite being outrebounded 51-39 on the night, Howard Payne forced 18 McMurry turnovers and capitalized for 21 points to McMurry’s 10 in the game.
With the Lady Jackets holding a 28-21 halftime advantage, McMurry never led in the game. It was under 10-point ballgame most of the second half, but HPU would hold McMurry scoreless the last three minutes to secure the 67-57 win.
Howard Payne improves to 12-2 overall and 8-2 in conference play. McMurry falls to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in conference.
Jasmin Thomas led HPU with 14 points and five steals. Thomas was 5 of 5 from the free-throw line and did not turn the ball over on the night. Brittany Roberson dished a game high seven assists along with 11 points. Roshonda Gayden had 11 and Kalin Hana in a starting roll recorded five blocks.
Celeste Belizario led McMurry with a game high 15 points. Keisha Collins had 10 rebounds and nine points.
Howard Payne will continue the home stand with a showdown with Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
