Brandon Irwin led Howard Payne University with a game high 20 points in a 85-69 win over visiting LeTourneau University Monday evening.
Howard Payne shot well in the game 52% of their shots. HPU was also 7 of 7 from behind the three-point line.
Howard Payne improves to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in conference while LeTourneau falls to 1-7 overall and 0-6 in ASC action.
HPU put together a run midway through the first half to gain a 14 point lead. A Henry Valladares jumper with 5:58 left in the first half gave HPU the 29-15 lead.
After leading 41-30 at the break, LeTourneau was able to cut the HPU lead to 6, 56-50 with 11:31 to play. Howard Payne shut the door from there and holding Letu to just 16 more points for the rest of the game.
Irwin, who finished with the game high 20 points, was 10 of 10 from the free-throw line in the game. Joshua Dada and Michael Thompson each added 11 points for HPU.
Deitrich Williams was the only LeTourneau player in double digits in scoring with 17 points.
Howard Payne will play next at home on Saturday versus Sul Ross State.
The Howard Payne University women’s basketball used a huge run to start the second half and secured a 69-49 win over LeTourneau University Monday evening in American Southwest Conference action.
Howard Payne outscored LeTourneau 25-9 to start the second half and push an 11-point halftime lead to 27. A Brittani Gattis three-pointer gave HPU a 59-32 lead with 8:57 left in the game.
HPU forced 32 LeTourneau turnovers in the game. The Lady Jackets capitalized scoring 29 points off turnovers to just 11 for Letu.
The game was in HPU’s hands from the start building an early 12-4 lead. HPU was unable to get more than a 12-point lead in the opening half holding a 34-23 halftime lead.
Jasmin Thomas scored 12 and recorded three steals for the Lady Jackets. Brittany Roberson followed with 11 points and a game high four assists. Abby Parmelly and Tresta Donahoo each added eight points for HPU.
La’Queda Davis led LeTourneau with 17 points. No other Letu player was in double digits. Sharday Cotton had nine points and eight rebounds.
Howard Payne will play next at home on Saturday versus Sul Ross State.
