hpu_football_logoThe Howard Payne University offense got three third quarter touchdowns to take over the lead for good, the Yellow Jackets go on to post a 41-27 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God University Saturday evening in non-conference football action.

Howard Payne recorded 510 yards of total offense sparked by Richard Young’s 230 yards on 17 of 29 passing. Young finished the game throwing five touchdowns, three to receiver Colby Mica totaling 89 yards.

Zarron Dove also had a great game for the Jackets gaining 150 yards on 29 carries for one TD. Dove would have another touchdown receiving as well. Sayvon Young-Cormier would grab his second TD pass of the season to round out Young’s five TD passes.

Victor Gonzales and Bo Ross led the HPU defense with eight tackles each. Jason Disney finished with seven tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.

After finding themselves down 17-10 at the half, the Jackets put the offense together recording three third quarter touchdowns. With only eight first downs at halftime, Howard Payne had 21 in the second half to finish with 29 for the game.

The Yellow Jackets are now 1-1 overall and Southwestern Assemblies falls to 0-2 on the year. Howard Payne will be back at home next week to take on Wayland Baptist University at 1:00 pm.
