Ima Gem Queen passed away, Wednesday, September 07, 2011 in a local nursing home following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Union Presbyterian Church with Rev. Mary D’ Alessio officiating, interment to follow at Eastlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at Davis-Morris Funeral Home.
Ima Gem was born October 21, 1916 in Dublin, Texas to H.W. and Gem (Meadows) Queen. Early in her childhood she developed polio and and was confined to a wheelchair for the last 30 years. She was able to care for herself at home until 5 years ago.
She graduated from Daniel Baker College in 1937. During World War II she was the executive secretary to the Camp Signal Officer at Camp Bowie. After the war she continued to work for the training officers at the camp. She then became Office Manager for a local Insurance Agency until her retirement.
In early childhood she became interested in art. She studied under several well-known artists. She was a member of the Brownwood Art Association and held several different offices including editor of the Art Association newsletter.
Ima Gem was an active member of the Union Presbyterian Church for many years. She served as Church Secretary, Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, and was active in the youth group, and the choir.
She is preceded in death by her parents, H.W. and Gem Queen; her brother, H.W. Queen, Jr. and sister, Mary Pursch. She is survived by one sister, Camilla Slagle of Bastrop, Texas; one niece, Suzanne Slagle Caperton; 4 nephews, Bill Pursch and Kenneth Pursch of Brownwood; Stephen James Slagle and James Bain Slagle.
