Howard_Payne_logosmallA Service of Lessons and Carols will be presented by Howard Payne University’s Heritage Singers at 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 2, at St. John’s Church in Brownwood. The event is free and open to the public.

Through scripture readings and music, the service reflects on the wonder and mystery of the birth of Jesus. The scriptures will be read by members of HPU’s faculty and staff.

The event is based on the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at King’s College, Cambridge, first held on Christmas Eve 1918. The service was first broadcast in 1928 and, with the exception of 1930, has broadcast annually, even during the Second World War, when the ancient glass had been removed from the Chapel.

The university’s Heritage Singers is under the direction of Dr. Monte Garrett, director of choral activities at HPU, and accompanied by organist Dr. Allen Reed, professor of music.
