Brownwood City Council recognized the Howard Payne University women’s soccer team with a proclamation honoring their efforts in cancer awareness and fundraising. The team formed a fundraising event “Kick for the Cure” Pink Out game on October 26th during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The women were able to meet their goal, to raise $1000, when they played the University of Dallas in a non-conference game that had a theme of pink everywhere. Their uniforms for the day were pink with a special logo that was designed by their assistant coach. T-shirts were available with the same logo as the team’s jerseys which sold for $10. Three soccer balls signed by the HPU Women’s Soccer Team were available for purchase for $100 each. Proceeds from the sales of the t-shirts and signed soccer balls were donated to the “Susan G. Komen for the Cure” Headquarters in Dallas, Texas.
The women plan to make the Pink Out game an annual event and to continue raising money for this cause to fund cancer research. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the U.S. There are 250,000 new cases every year and the disease kills 40,000 people each year.
