IRVING, Texas –The Howard Payne baseball team took two games of a three game series with the University of Dallas this weekend.
Howard Payne won the single game on Friday 4-0. It was the first shutout for the Yellow Jackets since March 5, 2005. Billy Ray Cruz got the win for the Jackets pitching 5 and 2/3 innings. Cruz gave up just four hits and struckout six. Nick Loving was 3 of 4 at the plate and Dustin Climer drove in two runs.
In game one of the double header on Saturday the Jackets fell 3-4. HPU held a three run advantage after scoring a run in each of the first three innings. UDallas answered with runs in the fourth and sixth to tie the game at 3-3. UDallas scored in the bottom of the seventh to win the game. Robert Anders got the loss for HPU.
In game two of the double header the Jackets dominated with a convincing 9-1 victory. HPU scored 7 runs in the top of the sixth inning to blow the game wide open. Will Hood got the complete game win giving up just one run on four hits and walking no one. Kyle Lloyd was 3 of 3 at the plate with 2 RBI. Nick Loving had 2 hits and Dustin Climer also drove in 2 runs.
Howard Payne improves to 4-3 on the year and the University of Dallas stands at 1-8 overall. HPU plays next Friday and Saturday in Marshall, Texas in a three game series with East Texas Baptist University.
