Howard Payne University’s Allen Andrus, a sophomore music education major from Anson, was named the 2011-2012 recipient of the Clara Freshour Nelson Scholarship.

The Clara Freshour Nelson family provided a substantial endowment for students studying music in Texas schools. The scholarship is renewable until the student graduates.

The scholarship endowment is administered by the Texas Association of Music Schools, an organization comprised of music executives from colleges and universities in the state of Texas.

Andrus is a member of the Yellow Jacket Band, Concert Choir and Winds of Triumph.

“We are most pleased that one of our students is recognized beyond our own campus for his accomplishments and ability,” said Stephen Goacher, professor of music and director of Winds of Triumph and HPU’s jazz ensemble. “Allen is distinguished in flute, saxophone and voice. A light always shines through his music and his person.”

Andrus expressed his appreciation to the Freshour Nelson family and the Texas Association of Music Schools.

“Without the scholarship, I might not even be at this university,” he said. “I am very thankful for the scholarship and the opportunity it gave me to attend HPU.”
