Howard Payne junior outfielder Katie Poerner (pictured) led a group of eight Lady Jackets on the 2012 American Southwest Conference softball awards and All-Conference teams following a division-only vote by head coaches, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
ASC WEST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE YEAR/1ST TEAM ALL-WEST DIVISION
Katie Poerner was named West Division Player of the Year after batting .397 with a conference-high eight triples – three more than anyone else in the ASC and 6th overall in the nation. She also had two home runs, seven doubles, 23 RBIs and was 16-for-16 on stolen base attempts. She was named to the ASC All-Tournament Team as well.
ALL-WEST DIVISION SECOND TEAM – UTL
Haleigh Caraway hit .302 this season on 126 at bats. She drove in 14 runs on 38 hits and was 4-for-5 on stolen base attempts.
ALL-WEST DIVISION SECOND TEAM – Pitcher
Kayla Castillo had a team best 2.80 ERA in 112 innings of action. Castillo posted a 7-8 overall record and had two saves. Her 52 strikeouts was also a team best.
ALL-WEST DIVISION HONORABLE MENTION – 1B
Shandi Winstead was second on the team in hitting with a .304 average. Starting in all 40 games as a freshman, she recorded 16 RBIs on 35 hits. She had six doubles, one triple and two homeruns on the year.
ALL-WEST DIVISION HONORABLE MENTION – 2B
Carissa Zarate hit .299 for the Lady Jackets driving in 12 runs on 26 hits. She was also 8-for-8 on stolen base attempts this season.
ALL-WEST DIVISION HONORABLE MENTION – Shortstop
Tylene Middleton led the team in doubles with 11 good for 10th in the ASC. She started all 40 games for HPU and led the team in homeruns with four. She was also the team RBI leader with 27 on 33 hits.
ALL-WEST DIVISION HONORABLE MENTION – Outfield
Kimble Luna was second in the ASC in sac bunts with 11. She hit .220 driving in eight runs on 27 hits.
ALL-WEST DIVISION HONORABLE MENTION – Designated Player
Jessica Morales was second in the ASC in walks with 28. She recorded 20 RBIs on 29 hits with six doubles.
