The Howard Payne softball team dropped their season opening double-header to Trinity University 9-2 and 6-0 Saturday afternoon in San Antonio.
Howard Payne scored first in game one of the double-header when Hailey Naifeh crossed the plate on an error by the Trinity shortstop.
Trinity answered back in the bottom of the inning with two runs. Trinity added to more in the bottom of the fourth.
Howard Payne scored their second run in the fifth when Carissa Zarate singled through the left side scoring Abby Hinojos from third. Hinojos pitch ran for Naifeh who walked, Hinojos then stole second and third base.
Trinity then put the game away putting up five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Trinity’s Friday picked up the complete game win for Trinity, striking out eight and only giving up three hits.
Kayla Castillo was credited with the loss for HPU throwing four and two-thirds innings. Haifeh recorded two hits for the Lady Jackets.
In game two, it was all Trinity as they scored runs in the first, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to win 6-0. Jenna Allen got the loss for HPU throwing three and two-thirds innings. Haleigh Caraway also pitched some in relief.
Trinity’s Devost got the win giving up two hits and striking out 13.
The Lady Jackets are now 0-2 to start the year and Trinity is 2-0 overall. Howard Payne will be in California from February 24th – 26th taking on the University of La Verne, Whittier College, and Chapman University.
