The Howard Payne men’s soccer team battled Austin College to a 1-1 tie to remain undefeated to start the season.
Neither team was able to capitalize through most of the first half, but just when it seemed the two sides would take a scoreless game into the half, Kevin Ruiz sent a diving header into the net off a corner kick from Patrick Barker with just two seconds left before the break to give Howard Payne a 1-0 lead.
The lead would not last long however, as Austin College found the net in the 52nd minute to square things at 1-1. That would remain the score as both teams had scoring chances, but both defenses came up big and sent things into overtime.
HPU goal keepers Lance Forehand and Allan Chedahi split time and saw just four Austin College shots on as the Jacket defense played solid in front of them.
The Jackets are now 1-0-1 on the year and will travel to Centenary College on the 8th and Hendrix College on the 10th for non-conference matches.
The Howard Payne University women’s soccer team fell 4-0 to Texas Wesleyan University Tuesday at Citizens National Bank Field.
Howard Payne found themselves down early when Texas Wesleyan scored just a 1:22 into the game. TWU scored two more in the opening period to gain a 3-0 halftime advantage.
TWU added another goal with less than 3 minutes left in the match to bring the score to the final 4-0.
The Lady Jackets were outshot 19-6 in the match. Adrienne Walker gained the loss for HPU recording seven saves and playing all 90 minutes in goal.
Howard Payne now stands at 0-2-0 on the year and will play next on September 14th at home versus the University of Texas – Dallas.
