LuisTamezhpumenCLARKSVILLE, Ark. – Howard Payne University overcame a second half deficit to pull out a 2-1 victory over the University of the Ozarks by netting the game-winning goal with one minute to play Saturday in American Southwest Conference action.

Saturday’s match saw Howard Payne overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit as the Yellow Jackets scored both of their goals late. Ozark’s Francisco Garza scored when he dribbled around a pair of defenders to his left and ripped one in lower right corner in the 28th minute.

The match remained 1-0 until the 82nd minute when Howard Payne’s Luis Tamez scored the equalizer on an assist from Reese Lawson. Just when it appeared the match was heading into overtime, Howard Payne took advantage of an Ozarks’ misplayed ball and scored the game-winner in the waning moments. HPU’s Lawson scored the game winner at the end of the 88th minute.

Kyle Huesing played all 90 minutes in goal for HPU recording two saves. Ozarks goalkeeper Neil Thompson had six saves, all coming in the second half.

HPU improves to 5-3-1 overall and 3-3-0 in ASC play, while Ozarks stands at 3-7-0 overall and 2-4-0 in conference play.

Howard Payne will play next weekend at home versus Mississippi College and Louisiana College.


The Howard Payne women’s soccer team held a 2-0 halftime lead and then scored four more goals in the second half to gain a 6-0 win over the University of the Ozarks Saturday in American Southwest Conference action.

Howard Payne’s Haley Clanahan scored a goal in the 21st minute and in the 30th minute to help the Yellow Jackets to a 2-0 halftime advantage. Howard Payne later put the match out of reach with four goals within a twenty-minute span.

HPU got goals from Anna McCay, Abriana Gutierrez, Kerrie Ford, and Leslie Jones in the second period. Lauren Hatcher recorded two assists.

Ozarks did get three shots off in the second half, two of which were on frame.

Adrienne Walker and Kaitlyn Kelm each spend a period in goal for HPU gaining 1 and 2 saves respectively. Ozarks goalkeeper Morgan O’Neil recorded 11 saves.

The Lady Jackets improve to 3-3-3 overall and 2-2-2 in ASC play, while Ozarks falls to 0-10-1 overall and 0-5-1 in ASC action.

Howard Payne will play next weekend at home versus Mississippi College and Louisiana College.
