Six Howard Payne University men’s tennis players were named to the 2011 American Southwest Conference men’s tennis all-conference teams and awards as voted on by the league’s 13 head coaches, the ASC office announced on Wednesday.
HPU junior Edward Martinez was voted sportsmanship athlete of the year for the ASC West Division. He also garnered Honorable Mention All-West Division honors in the number one singles spot. He was 5-1 overall in conference singles action. Edward and number one doubles partrner Raymond Borjas, were named Honorable Mention All-West Division.
Borjas was also Honorable Mention All-West Division in the number three singles spot. He was 3-3 in conference singles play and 4-2 in conference doubles action with Martinez.
Shawn Hodge received Honorable Mention All-West Division honors in number five singles play with a 4-2 record. He also paired with Luis Vallecillo to gain Honorable Mention All-West Division honors with a 5-1 record in number three double action.
Jeff Toyne and Ryan Prather rounded out HPU’s honorees gaining number two doubles awards with a 4-2 conference record this season.
As a team, the Yellow Jackets were 7-7 overall and 3-3 in ASC match play this season.
