The Howard Payne men’s soccer team played a hard fought game, but in the end the game finished in a 1-1 draw with Hardin-Simmons University in ASC action Saturday afternoon.
The first half is back and forth; both teams accumulating 8 fouls, Hardin-Simmons out shot HPU 5 to 2 but the half ended scoreless, 0-0.
In the 60 minute Hardin-Simmons is able to break through with a combo play, Cody McGrath combining with Estavan Arbiaza to give HSU the lead, 1-0.
Only three minutes later, Shane Cazad is fouled in the box when attempting a bicycle kick which setup a penalty kick for Ben Bishop.
Ben Bishop is able to finish the PK and take the score back to even, 1-1.
With three seconds left in the second overtime, HPU’s Jaime Benitez is given a free kick but the attempt goes wide, ending the game after 110 minutes in a 1-1 draw.
Again, after all was said and done, fouls were even at 18. Shots on goal were in favor of HSU 7 to 5. HSU dominated corner kicks 16 to 3.
HPU keeper Francisco Medina makes 6 saves only allowing 1 past him. HSU’s Logan Waters ends the day with 3 saves only allowing the PK.
The Jackets move to 8-6-1 overall and 7-4-1 in the ASC, HSU goes to 7-2-5 overall and 6-1-3 in conference.
The next game for the Jackets is Tuesday, Oct. 27, on the road against non-conference opponent University of Dallas.
