BELTON, Texas – The Howard Payne football team fell to 2nd ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 80-0 Saturday afternoon in conference action.
The Yellow Jackets found themselves down 59-0 at the half after Mary Hardin-Baylor picked off four Howard Payne passes in the first two quarters.
Starting quarter back Richard Young would go down in the first quarter with an injury. Then second-string QB Zachary Alvarado would have to leave the game in the second quarter with an injury. Corbyn Koiner then finished out the game under center for the Jackets.
Koiner finished the game 6-for-12 passing with one interception. Alvarado was 4-for-8 for 24 yards with two interceptions and Young was 7-for-13 for 36 yards and one interceptions.
Colby Mica led with 28 yards on seven catches and Burns had 23 yards on 10 carries for the Jackets.
Adrian Hopkins led the Jacket defense 12 tackles, two for loss. Bo Ross followed with 11 tackles. HPU sack leader Jason Disney recorded HPU’s only sack along with five tackles.
The Howard Payne offense managed just 144 yards of total offense, 70 yards rushing and 65 passing. UMHB tallied 531 yards of total offense, 323 rushing and 208 passing.
The Yellow Jackets would hold the advantage in time of Possession 35:03 to 24:57 for Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The Yellow Jackets are now 3-5 overall and 1-4 in conference action. Nationally ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor stands at 8-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Howard Payne will be back in action next week at home versus Sul Ross State University at 1:00 pm.
