TYLER, Texas – Brandon Gould scored a career high 32 points for Howard Payne in a 97-93 conference loss to the University of Texas at Tyler Thursday evening.

The Yellow Jackets would lead for most of the second-half, but UT-Tyler took the lead with 2:30 minutes remaining to secure the win.

After a close first 20 minutes, Howard Payne closed out the opening half on a stunning 7-0 run, taking a 45-36 lead into the locker room.

The Jackets saw themselves up 64-57 after Quelan Lancaster hit a layup at the 11:02 mark of the second half, seeming to take control of momentum.

UT Tyler would battle-back, chipping away at the HPU-lead of the next nine minutes, eventually tying the score at 86-86 on a free throw.

After taking the lead on their next possession, UT-Tyler hit six free-throws out of seven the rest of the way, holding on to win 97-93.

The game featured eight ties, as both teams shot 56-percent, with the Patriots shooting 58-percent for the game.

UT Tyler also shot 50-percent from three-point land, but the Jackets answered, shooting a stunning 67-percent from beyond the arc (10 of 15).

Brandon Gould was 10 of 12 from the field and 9 of 11 from the line in his career high 32-point performance for the Jackets. Donovan Ford added 21 points off the bench. Quelan Lancaster had 12 points and a game high 10 rebounds. Jorden Young had 11 points and Ross Whittet a team high five assists.

Howard Payne is now 4-16 overall and 4-13 in conference play. UT-Tyler stands at 11-9 overall and 10-7 in ASC action. The Jackets will travel to the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark on Saturday to finish out their road trip.  Pictured above is Brandon Gould.


Shooting woes for Howard Payne led to a 67-41 conference loss for the Lady Jackets to the University of Texas at Tyler Thursday evening in Tyler.

Howard Payne started the game on a short 5-0 run, but UT-Tyler responded with a 36-15 run over the rest of the first half.

Leading 36-20 at the half, UT Tyler continued to build their lead, going up by as many as 27 in the second half.

The Patriots held the Lady Jackets to just 30-percent shooting for the game, and just 20-percent from beyond the arc.

Howard Payne was led by Sarah Van Remmen with 14 points and six rebounds. Danyel Bradley followed with 11 points. ASC blocks leader, Kalin Hanna, had a game high four blocks along with six rebounds.

The HPU Lady Jackets are now 12-8 overall and 11-6 in conference action. UT-Tyler stands at 17-3 overall and 15-2 in ASC play. The Lady Jackets will travel to the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark on Saturday to finish out their road trip.
