Local high school bands from Brownwood, Early, Coleman, and Comanche as well as from other states including Arizona, Arkansas and Kansas attended the HPU Band Leadership Camp that was held June 21-25. The week was full with placement auditions, rehearsals, marching practice, conducting instruction for drum majors, percussion instruction, and three performance ensembles.
Thursday evening participants showed off their talent in the “School Showcase Showdown”. Friday the camp featured the talents of students again in their “Final Exhibition” which also included awards for outstanding and most improved in several categories.
The camp offered its first Leadership Summit Day in conjunction with the camp and Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, president of Attitude Concepts for Today, Inc. was featured as the special guest speaker.
The camp dates back to 1973 when it was originally called Howard Payne Flag Camp. Over the years its name has changed to others that are more suitable as the camp expanded into more areas of participation, currently named HPU Band Leadership Camp.
